My right foot is improving daily, and I managed to tentatively take a few steps on it this morning, WITHOUT screaming in agony and falling over. I am however going slightly crazy from inactivity.
I finally read the book some consider to be the “Barefoot Bible”. Christopher McDougall’s amazing tale,”Born to Run: The Hidden Tribe, the Ultra-runners, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen.” If you have not read this yet, YOU NEED TO!
The only problem I have found with this book is my current inability to run, at all! WHY ME! (rant over)
I have been trying to keep myself busy with the Thing’s Three as a way to keep my mind off of my injury and what I can’t do. We made a “Livingroom Fishing Trip” out of some construction paper, magnets, sticks and paperclips.
I cut a whole bunch of different fish shapes out of construction paper and wrote the color of the fish, a Letter (Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd and so on..) and a math problem (addition) on the back. We each take turns and when a Thing gets a fish, I ask them what color it is, what letter it has and the answer to the simple math problem. There are also clams, starfish and even a few SHARKS!
I have been wearing my homemade “bicycle tire” huaraches almost everywhere, but Mrs. MuddyJ thinks they look a little on the “recycled hippie crap” side of things for her to be entirely comfortable with
(being seen with) me wearing them everywhere. I decided to make a “going out” pair that looks less “home-made/recycled” and more “quality-custom sandal”
I bought a bag of scrap leather at the local Hobby Lobby. It contained a bunch of larger scraps that averaged out to be about a 1/4 or more thick.
I followed the usual procedure for making the soles, then I played around with the lacing until I got something that wouldn’t move around a lot and looked more like a “purchased” sandal, yet still felt and moved like a regular huarache.I used black suede lace for the lacing, although I plan to make another, very different ultra-minimalist pair soon! Now I have a pair of leather huaraches that look decidedly …Roman? NEAT!
I AM SPARTACUS! …well OK, not really…, but I’m working on having that build!
Are you excited to take on August’s Fitness Challenge(s)???I’ll be taking myself on for the pull-ups in force, to keep my mind of off running…. If I am better by mid-August, I’ll be seeing everyone at the end of the running challenge too…
